With love
It was narrated from Sa’eed bin Abu Rashid that Ya’la bin Murrah told them that:
They had gone out with the Prophet (ﷺ) to a meal to which they had been invited, and Husain was there playing in the street. The Prophet (ﷺ) came in front of the people and stretched out his hands, and the child started to run here and there. The Prophet (ﷺ) made him laugh until he caught him, then he put one hand under his chin and the other on his head and kissed him, and said, “Husain is part of me and I am part of him. May Allah love those who love Husain. Husain is a tribe among tribes.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 144
With mercy
The Prophet (ﷺ) kissed his grandson Hasan when a man named Al-Aqra was sitting with him. Al-Aqra said, “I have ten children and have never kissed one of them.” The Prophet (ﷺ) looked at him and said, “Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully.”
Bukhari 5998, 5651
With playfulness
The Prophet (ﷺ) would play with his grandchildren and carry them on his shoulders. Once when he was carrying Hasan on his shoulders, someone remarked, “O Hasan, what a great ride you have.” The Prophet (ﷺ) smiled and replied, “And don’t you see what a great rider I have!”

With patience
Anas Ibn Malik, who served the Prophet (ﷺ) as a child, said, “I served Allah’s Messenger for ten years, and, by Allah, he never said to me any harsh word, and he never said to me about a thing as to why I had done that and as to why I had not done that.”
Bukhari 5691, Muslim 2309
With guidance
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The best gift from a father to his child is education and upbringing.”
At-Tirmidhi
With responsibility
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges. The ruler who has authority over people, is a guardian and is responsible for them; a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for them; a woman is a guardian of her husband’s house and children and is responsible for them; a slave is a guardian of his master’s property and is responsible for it; so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 7138
With honesty
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Anybody who called a child, saying that he would give him a certain thing, and did not give it, speaks a lie.”
Ahmad
With fairness
Al-Nu’man ibn Basheer said that his father brought him to the Prophet (ﷺ) to say that he had given Nu’man a gift of wealth. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “O Basheer, do you have any other children?” He said, “Yes.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Have you given all of them a similar gift?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Then do not ask me to bear witness to this, for I do not bear witness to injustice.”
